US Poker Law Not Happening Very Soon

With an election year coming, the outlook isn’t good

Even with a law passed next year, there will be a delay until it’s applied

Online gambling and online poker have been a very delicate subject in the United States for a long time now. But ever since the Black Friday events shook the industry from the ground up, the subject has become even more volatile than ever. Now, there’s an ongoing struggle from poker lobbyists and poker networks to encourage and convince lawmakers to legalize online poker in the United States, and an equally large struggle from members of the other side of the issue of the game to make sure the laws stay exactly as they are right now.

The latest news from the battle for legalizing online poker isn’t looking very good for online poker players and other enthusiasts. It seems that 2012 will be a tough years for politicians. With it being an election year, they won’t risk passing any laws that might shed some negative light on their actions, whatever those actions might be. The Republicans, in particular, will fight the legalization and regulation of online poker with everything they’ve got. The timing behind these kinds of talks cannot be worse, either. The whole scandal surrounding Full Tilt Poker has lasted for a full four months without diminishing in intensity, and it’s very unlikely that now, with the lawsuits from the Department of Justice coming up, they will die down.

This is not a good scenario for online poker enthusiasts, especially for the ones in the United States. Even though it might seem like the American players are the only ones to suffer from this current situation, they’re most definitely not, as the absence of American players brings the overall state of poker down.

Also, if a bill is to pass sometime in 2013, after the elections pass, it will take some time before it’s implemented, so we’re currently looking at at least two years of poker being illegal in the US.

Which is too bad, seeing as there’s an enormous request for the game in the States. Just a short while back, COPA, the California Online Poker Association, has launched a play money site, where online poker players that reside in the Sunshine State can play for fun. Even though it’s not your average online poker site, it still is a huge step in the right direction, as it shows that people are determined to stick by their favorite sport and not back down.

Poker Players arrested in Las Vegas

Two poker pros were caught cheating at craps

They are facing serious accusations

It seems like the world of high stakes poker is not without its bad seeds. Just like any other major industry, there are people that tarnish its reputation in tabloids and pokernews by behaving themselves in less than honorable ways. Hollywood immediately comes to mind, a place where the shiniest stars can get down and dirty sometimes. Well, the sport of poker is, unfortunately, not the exception to this rule.

One of the most recent news pieces center around two high stakes poker players who like to dabble in other forms of gambling on the side. When they were in the casino, they were no strangers to the craps pits. Recently, they were regulars at one casino in Las Vegas, the Wynn Casino, and after a stay that lasted for more than a month, the two poker pros were apparently up $700,000 just from playing craps. The casino staff noticed something was amiss, and that’s when the troubles started for the two.

The two poker players in question are Veronica Dabul and Leo Fernandez. They’re two of the most well known poker pros from South America, and it seems like they’re trying to expand their business to the world of craps, as well. They were arrested yesterday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The Board has them on a charge of “sliding”, which is an illegal tactic used in the game of craps.

Sliding essentially involves manipulating the dice in your hand. Instead of rolling around on the table before finally settling on a face, the dice actually slides across the table, arriving in the same position it was in your hand. This is an ancient technique, and in the hands of an experienced con artist it can even go unnoticed. While it CAN go unnoticed, this wasn’t the case for the two poker players, who are now facing serious charges.

The two were held in police custody. While Veronoica Dabul was only there for two days, Leo Fernandez wass behind bars for a whole week. Not only did Fernandez jeopardize his freedom, he put his whole career in danger, as he might lose his sponsorship with PokerStars following recent events. Dabul is also up against the same odds. Whatever happens next, though, it will be a serious stain on their careers, if they’re to be let into another major poker tournament again.
